The Ghost of The P*lace
Episode 7
Season 1, 1984

Introducing: --
Stacy is very young. Therefore, no one is surprised when she conks out after the last number of the day. She can barely keep her head up for rehearsal.

As Riley is locking up The P*lace, he casually mentions that there’s a ghost haunting the building. The lights blink, and Stacy is spooked. But this ghost is revealed to be wearing a striped shirt and paper hat…it’s Riley playing a joke.

The kids get him back and taunt Stacy as well for good measure.

During the rehearsal, Stacy drifts off and when she awakes, the entire P*lace is dark and empty…or is it? Turns out Stacy is not as alone as she thinks.
A huge green ghost is intent on scaring her – except he’s not so great. He’s the only ghost who hasn’t been inducted into the Ghost Society, an honors society for great ghosts. Every time the lights blink, it’s a signal that someone else has made it. For the past 300 years, he’s been 4 people shy. He’s the only one, and he feels left out. His story rings home with Stacy.
With Stacy’s help, the ghost sets out to scare his last four people – Kids Incorporated – and give Stacy a boost of self-esteem. The formerly brave kids are sufficiently spooked, and everyone is happy.
But did it really happen? Stacy awakes to a P*lace filled with only the living, and they tell her it was all just a dream. She’s disappointed…until the lights blink.
I gave this episode 4 microphones because it’s a classic, but parts of it don’t hold up well over time. How would Riley know The P*lace had a ghost ever since they opened? He only started working there 6 episodes ago! And if the lights are blinking while Stacy and the ghost are talking, then he’s not really the only ghost who hasn’t been inducted, now is he?
Also, there’s my most favorite stupid moment. Right after they meet and the ghost explains about his quota, Stacy confesses, "...sometimes, I feel left out and all alone myself." Well, apparently, Mr. Ghost wasn't listening, because he then says, "So you feel alone and left out too, like I do?" Yes! Isn't that what she just said!?!??! You're too stupid to get into the Ghost Society!

- This is the only performance that used bubbles – apparently, Riley had his way and they never used them again.
- Ghosts can apparently transport other people.
Riley is such a great guy. In the end, after Stacy mentions the whole Ghost Society and lights blinking, he obviously feels bad for her, and suddenly takes off, declaring “I’ll lock up.” All of a sudden, the lights blink. I think it was really sweet of him to not make her feel so bad, considering he made the whole thing up.
