Inside Jokes and References

Here I have every reference to an actual episode that I've made in all my fanfiction. If you notice anything that I've left out, feel free to let me know at fanfiction @ imallwrite.com

In You Make Me Sick:

- Stacy's frog Ziggy is mentioned in the first ep. of the series (Season 1, 1984), and also seems to be suffering from separation anxiety when Stacy runs away (ep.50, S.2, '85).

"Well, maybe he wants you to kiss him and turn him into a prince." Later, Stacy does indeed meet up with a 'frog prince' (ep.88, S.5, '88)

- Renee's crush on David Hasselhoff is discovered when he comes and talks to The Kid (ep. 15, S.1, '84)

In Moving On:

- Of course, I got the whole idea from the ep. in which Mickey's leaving is explained (ep.27, S.2, '85)

- "Even though they hated his commanding attitude,..." So much so that they all left him (ep. 1, S.1, '84)

- "He was thinking of the last dance they'd performed at, which Renee and Stacy almost ruined by fighting so hard they nearly forced the band to choose between the two of them." (ep.22, S.1, '84)

 In Christmas Incorporated:

-"For years, it had been called the Palace..." In just about every season, they delved into the rich history of the P*lace. I felt I had to mention it at least once.

- "...they couldn't understand why he read books outside of school." They were pretty baffled in ep.28, S.2, '85.

- "Ryan loved detective stories, sometimes a little too much." He once daydreamed he was a detective. (ep.47, S.2, '85)

- "I think I'll write another dopey poem about peace today!" Peace was the subject of the poem that won Renee $300. (ep.40, S.2. '85)

- Riley usually invented crazy things that got out of his control. I merely added to the list.

- Renee says, "Me, three!" two other times (ep.37, S.2, '85 and ep.45, S.2, '85)

- Thanks, Doc - The ep. in which the Kids play, "Paper, Rock, Scissors" (ok, so I was a little backward) was when Gloria was being hospitalized to have her tonsils removed (33-2-85)

- This would be after Samantha's first appearance. (ep.46, S.2, '85)

In Double Time:

- This ep was inspired by the episode, "Rock of Ages" (44-2-85), in which, at the end, the subject of traveling into the future is brought up, but shot down. I always wondered, how would it have gone?

-"I just had ice cream named after me." Little Kid wouldn't think that was such a big deal if he knew all the grief he'll have to go through to get to that point (78-4-87).

- Renee probably shouldn't have told her younger self this, but I'm sure the little Kids noticed that there wasn't an older version of Gloria around (66-4-87).

- More spilled beans. It seems becoming a big sister herself has made quite a difference in Stacy (63-3-86).

- I thought that seeing the two sisters together might have always made The Kid think of his own relationship with his estranged brother [Damn! I just remembered his name was Billy, too! I've really got to get one of those baby books] (75-4-87)

In The Strike:

- The reason I picked 5pm is because for the longest time, that was when KI came on where I was.

- The owner never had a name or face, he was just "the owner".

In Sour Note:

- The whole idea naturally comes from the ep. that explains Gloria's departure.(ep.66, S.4, '87)

-"They stared at him like he was from another planet." Once again, the Kids don't understand Ryan's habit of reading.(ep.28, 8.2, '85)

- "Stacy and The Kid wisely separated themselves from Renee to avoid teasing her unmercifully..." when she starts hunting for paper because the last time they teased her, they nearly lost out on a gourmet meal.(ep.40, S.2, '85)

- "They emerged struggling with a familiar, old battered trunk." That trunk held everything, including Stacy's magic ring (ep.53, S.3, '86), costumes used for a movie audition (ep.82, S.5, '88), and who knows what else.

- The trunk also held Stacy and The Kid's leprechaun that no one else could see. (ep. 12, S.1, '84)

- The alien that wanted to take Renee home with him as a science project. (ep. 11, S.1, '84)

- Stacy's friendly ghost who couldn't get into the ghost society without fulfilling his scare quota. (ep.7, S.1, '84)

- "When Mickey left, we dedicated a performance to him." That they did, in ep.27, S.2, '85

- The P*lace was also dark when the Kids tricked Wendy into singing with them. (ep. 18, S.1, '84)

In And Baby Makes 3:

- The whole story is inspired by the ep. in which Renee and Stacy's mom is pregnant (ep.63, S.3, '86) and whether or not she had the baby is never mentioned.

- "If it hadn't been for Renee, Connie probably wouldn't have auditioned..." in the first ep. of the season. (ep.66, S.4, '87)

- "Renee and Richie had gotten off on the wrong foot... he raffled off a date with her to make money for the band." (ep.76, S.4, '87)

- "And we did tease her a lot when we were younger." Boy, did they! They teased her when she envied the life of a princess (ep.6, S.1, '84), when she swooned over David Hasselhoff (ep. 15, S.1, '84), and when she saw potential in other people's trash (ep. 17, S.1, '84). They teased her about her poetry (ep.40, S.2, '85), and the crush that threw her for a loop (ep.55, S.3, '86). They even tease her in my other fanfiction.

- Both Renee and Ryan work on the school newspaper as reporters.(ep.69,S.4, '87)

- "Need more room for your ego?" It's well known that The Kid has a big ego. (ep.60, S.3, '86)

"...slamming the door so hard the walls shook." I've seen that happen before. Apparently, it was a less-than-perfect set.

- Renee's White Rabbit impression, meaning that she's always late, is in reference to Connie's daydream about Wonderland. (ep.77, S.4, '87)

And no, I didn't notice until it was too late that Billy, the name I gave the girls' little brother, was also the name of a certain gweeb who is mentioned in, among others, ep.30. (S.2, '85)

In Spring Broken,

- Another mention from my other fanfic about the baby brother I gave the girls. I figure since they already have 2 girls, why not a boy?

- Even though he's not exactly everyone's favorite recurring character, I've brought back Brendan Roberts (eps.34 and 41, S.2, '85 and ep.59, S.3, '86).

- "I'm gonna clobber him" was also Richie's fate (ep.76, S.4, '87).

- "How's that inventing going?" We all know Riley is a less-than-successful inventor.

- "I'll buy you a banana split." Renee almost always has a banana split.

- "And people say I have a big ego." Ryan specifically tells him he has a Mozart complex (ep.60, S.3, '86).

in All's Fair In Love And War:

- The Kid makes the calculation that there are "only 7 more hours 'til the 15th", meaning it's about 5 pm at that moment. Yes, I'm very much aware of the date's significance (I tore into her character - don't you think I owe her a little?)

- hmm, Ryan mentioning elephants...ah, he'll never see that. Rumor has it he hates websites.

- There might be more little taunts, but the most obvious times Stacy and The Kid make fun of Renee are in eps.6 and 17, S.1, '84, ep.40, S.2, '85, and ep. 55,S.3, '86.

- Unbeknownst to me at the time, Renee's pretty handy with a tape recorder. She used one to get Gloria out of piano practice in The Beginning.

In The British Are Coming (Back),

- "Glad to see you're not exaggerating anymore, Rich." He already got in trouble for that (ep.71, S.4, '87).

- Ronnie was a girl who played basketball very well and at first glance so resembled a boy that everyone thought she was. Mickey and The Kid had to bake a cake because they bet that girls could not play as well as boys and lost (ep.24, S.1, '84).

- The second time Samantha came to visit, she tried to introduce the Kids to the wonders of Shakespeare (ep.59, S.3, '86).

- "Do you notice anything... funny about Renee and Stacy's cousin?" You mean, other than the fact that she's actually Renee in a wig? I just thought it was funny that there were never any jokes made about that.

- When The Kid sprained his wrist playing basketball and couldn't play the keyboards at rehearsal, Samantha., with her knowledge of pianos, stepped in (ep.46, S.2, '85).

- "Maybe someday, they"ll go visit you." "Yes, I think they will." Assuming Renee's leaving was planned in advance.

In Then There Were Four,

- Inspired by the first ep of S.5(ep.79, '88), in which Renee and The Kid's departures are explained.

- "...The Kid passing up performing on stage to do his homework?" Riley was right to be shocked.  School has never been The Kid's first priority. He wanted to quit once (15-1-84), and his study habits weren't that good, either (62-3-86).

- It might be reaching, but when Stacy asked Renee if she was waiting to tell her she was going away as her flight was leaving, it conjures up a Casablanca scenario, which the Kids later parody in ep. 100, S.6, '89.

- They'd only found out The Kid's real name this season, and when they did, assured him that he was, "still The Kid" to them (78-4-87), so naturally they would only use it in special situations.

- Renee tells Richie, "Try not to raffle anyone off while I'm gone." (76-4-87)

In Living the Life of Riley:

- The whole thing was inspired by Riley going off to college as explained in Season 6 (ep.92, '89).

- "Performing as a duo with Devyn bad been fun..." At the time, Kenny had been singing solo, and that's how the Kids found him (79-5-88).

- The sunglasses Ryan keeps referring to were worn by the Kids in Season 3(ep. 54, '86), when they were trying to find out why Riley was sneaking around.

- It's never actually said where Robin comes from, so I just assumed she was too young to be in the band before.

In Cover Story:

- This ep takes place about the same time as my other one, so Riley's still there.

- "Devyn and I could write another song." The last time they did that, they had originally planned to write two separate songs, but ended up collaborating without even knowing it (ep.80, S.5, '88).

- Once again, I brought Robin into the picture early.

- "...Ryan talking to the principal. Remembering how badly it went the last time..." The principal had summoned Ryan to tell him his expose on the school cafeteria had to go (83-5-88)

- "She had no idea she would be falling for a well used trick." The Kids had duped Wendy with a false excuse (18-1-84), and I had them do it to Gloria in Sour Note.

- "...the band entered its fifth incarnation." Since 1984, the band had changed members 4 times.

- "Connie was now devoting all her time to science..." She seemed to be off to a great start when she built that time machine (91-5-88).

In Sister Act:

- Okay, I'd better explain myself. We all remember that Renee and Stacy's birthdays are 2 days apart (ep.61, S.3,'86). Well, way back when everyone was pretending not to remember Renee's birthday (ep.13, S.1, '84), she asked them what day it was, and they all said, "the 4th." Later, Renee said, "Look at this ring my parents gave me. It's a garnet, my birthstone." I happen to know for a fact that's January's birthstone. So, that makes Renee's birthday Jan. 4th, and if Stacy's is 2 days before, that makes it the 2nd

P.S.: Anyone remember seeing Renee wear an amethyst - her real birthstone? I believe it was ep.50, but I'm not sure.

- "Just don't let him start singing." All together, people; Da Na Na...never mind (the whole season 6, '89).

- "At least she's allowed to cross the street!" Little Stacy not being able to was one reason the Kids couldn't take The Kid up on his suggestion to follow Mickey when he moved away (27-2-85)

- "...did you see those lights blinking? I think someone made it into the Ghost Society!"  A very sad take on It's a Wonderful Life, this was the story the Ghost of the P*lace told Stacy (ep.7, S.1, '84)

- Though they'd never admit it, the other Kids did see Tinkerbell after Stacy insisted they'd all been to Never-Never Land together(63-3-86).

- After finding out that her father was allergic to bunnies, Stacy mistakenly believed that the "hives" they were referring to were the ones that housed bees (ep.50, S.2, '85).

- Here it is again - Stacy's magic ring that brought more trouble than it did luck (ep.53, S.3, '86).

- When the leprechaun made Stacy and The Kid invisible, Stacy, taking offense at being called a "nerd" by Renee, reached over and pinched her. [Oh, and by the way, in case you forgot, the leprechaun's stage name was Michael O'Jackson.] (ep. 12, S.1, '84).

- "What about the time I tried to wear high heels and fell in that box?" Trying to be more grown-up, Stacy told everyone she wore heels all the time, and that's what happened (ep.37, S.2, '85).

- Renee was engrossed in entering one contest after another, and whenever Stacy asked her if something was wrong, that's what she said. So Ryan asked Renee, and sure enough, she said, "No, no, no, I'm fine, just fine!" (40-2-85).

- Their grandmother had sent them a necklace and bracelet for their birthdays, which they in turn sold in order to get a pendant and charm (ep.61, S.3, '86).

- Remember, I took it upon myself to give them a brother.

- They haven't said so at this point, but later, we learn that Flip's identical cousin (You think the writers were a tad obsessed with the Patty Duke Show or something?) is indeed a forest ranger (ep. 124, S.7, '91).

In On That Note:

- "...where Devyn crashed Kenny;s first rehearsal." That impromptu audition was how Devyn ended up alongside Kenny in the band (79-5-88).

- Richie's idea to raise money, raffling off a date with Renee, nearly got him clobbered (ep.76, S.4, '87).

- "...where he claimed the class presidency." Representing the little people, Richie ran against the class snob and took her down a peg or two (85-5-88).

- "Sound familiar?" Yes, it sounds like the time sudden fame went to Devyn's head and almost cost her everyone's friendship (94-6-89).

In Part 1: The Gang's All Here:

- Later, we will find out that Robin's cousin, Ana, and her recently divorced mom move in and subsequently take over Robin's room (ep. 113, S.7, '91).

In Part 3: Calling all Kids:

- "Aren't you the little punk who just walked up and demanded an audition?" Something like that. Mickey had barely left the block when Ryan showed up (ep.27, S.2, '85).

- Like I said in Part 1, by the time the series picked up again, Ana had already moved in with Robin (ep. 113, S.7, '91).

- Eric himself reminded Ana when she was feeling homesick that he, too, had recently moved there (121-7-91). I personally thought it would tie in nicely if I made him move into Richie's house, but we'd never know if that happened because remember, I made up the moving story, too. The one place the show stunk was getting rid of Kids without exit plotlines.

- I don't ever remember hearing where Haylie came from.

In Any Way You Slice It:

- Robin (and Kenny) know firsthand how they felt when Devyn got more attention than the rest of the band (ep.94, S.6, '89).

- Nicole expressed her anxiety about her recent move when her friend Celeste's dad, also new, got laid off (ep. 129, S.8, '92).

- Robin would know about curses, since she thought she was under one when she came upon an old mummy Flip got instead of a trash compactor (ep. 122, S.7, '91).

- Jared had decided to run for president because he was new and it sounded like a good way to meet people (ep. 127, S.8, '92). I decided to put him in the house I had everyone else living in because I felt the moving idea was getting a little old and decided to poke a little fun at it.

In The Old College Try:

- "So I'm a brain." Maybe he didn't make all straight A's, but Kenny's grades were better than he'd let on when his sister Ellen visited (13 1-8-92).

- If they ever mentioned where Charlie came from, I never caught it, but for the sake of argument, let's assume he was not new.

In P*lace Settings:

- Ok, so maybe that's not how it happened, but at the very least, Flip, as the owner, would have had to be present for the sale.

- Anthony was still feeling the effects of relocation when math became too much of a problem (142-9-93).

In Everything's Relative:

- "When Ana first got here, she was good at everything.. .and we all liked her. We didn't realize it looked to Robin like we were choosing Ana over her...but really, it was Ana who was jealous..." (113-7-91)

- "...And so Charlie passed me the ball, and I got it in just as the buzzer went off...we'd all been so mad at each other. The girls and I actually skipped a rehearsal!" (147-9-93)

In To Serve With Love, or, Dena's Day:

- When Anthony transferred schools, he had trouble catching up in his new math class (142-9-93).

- Charlie began seeing Jennifer after she asked him out (146-9-93).

- Nicole ran up such a huge phone bill calling her long-distance boyfriend that her parents banned her from the phone and gave her a typewriter instead (143-9-93).

- Haylie nearly missed out on a concert because her mom didn't approve of her going unsupervised (144-9-93).

In Blasted by the Past:

-Vong the alien was a student sent to investigate Earth who decided he'd go for extra credit by abducting the first inhabitant he met - Renee. (11-1-84)

- Yes, I am aware that light years are a measure of distance and not time.  However, this is a common sitcom mistake, and beyond the understanding of most kids who'd be watching this show.

- The reason Renee panicks when Riley is about to run an errand is she's afraid he'll be riding Superbike (17-1-84)

In The Halo Effect:

- Stacy has good reason to be suspicious of The Angels.  If Gloria had gone through with her initiation, she would have been wearing a cream pie (3-1-84).

- "Wild barbarians" was the term Gabriella Von Bron used to describe Stacy and The Kid's behavior towards her.  As they were leaving, Stacy turned and hollered back, "Nerd breath!"

In Drummed Up:

- Despite losing her good luck charm, Stacy had the lead role in a revamped "Wizard of Oz" musical (53-3-86)

- If Renee had already gone through her blue pair of glasses she was always wearing, she'd have to switch to the yellow ones she had for school (43-2-85)

- Perhaps Richie would have remembered Renee telling him he was "a pain in the neck sometimes" (76-4-87).

In Drive to Succeed:

- Riley can drive - he was the chauffeur for the rich kid who wanted to take Kids Incorporated after they left Mickey (1-1-84)

- Grandma Ruth (42-2-85) lives with Ryan and his parents (she has his old bedroom) after her husband Herbie passed away.

- Remember Billy the Gweeb? He is first mentioned in Season 2. Apparently Stacy likes him (or seriously doesn't!) in episode 30.

*Important note: The driving laws that I used are current, but fairly generic.

In What's Eating You?:

- Elsie is indeed "a cow" - she's the spokesanimal for Borden Dairy Foods.

- Nicole's dad is full of sage advice, which he demonstrated when she showed him their outstanding phone bill (141-9-93).

In Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right:

- Jules (55-3-86) and Renee seemed to be hitting it off pretty well, so they'd more than likely be dating regularly.

- Poor Stacy keeps getting forced into relationships with the invisible Billy the Gweeb (30-2-85).

- Even though there is already a Brendan Roberts, the name given for the school newspaper's editor (if you listen really quick) is Brendan Thomas (69-4-87)

- You know how I feel about those damn sweaters, lol. If you look closely, it looks as if the red one is just pulled over a dress, so taking it off wouldn't have been such a big deal.

In Romeo and Jennifer:

- Charlie and Jennifer (146-9-93) probably had a future, but her forward nature might have caused some friction if left unchecked.

- Ana and Rob (143-9-93) were another certain couple, and Rob seemed like a friendly, easygoing guy, too.

In Lend Me Your Ears:

- If you're wondering, the French actually translates to "What can I do?" Although the phrase "What am I gonna do?" is more popular on the show, I didn't like the way it translated (I was never good with past participles).

- I'm sure you might have figured it out...but just in case you didn't, the joke is, "Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side!" Lame, I know...but that's the idea.

- Gloria speaks French to Mbala (32-2-85), and she is seen with the others playing with the princess Luanna (6-1-84), so I would assume they got along, wouldn't you?

In Face the Music:

- When Ana first arrived, she would tell stories about meeting celebrities, but as she later revealed to Robin (113-7-91), they were false.

- Ana decided to name the dog they found after Sammy, her friend from her previous home (121-7-91).

In Bought for a Song:

When I looked up "silent" in a thesaurus, one of the options was "Garbo" (I guess Greta Garbo didn't talk much???). I figured I'd use it. "Thomas", of course, is an homage to creator Thomas Lynch.

In A House Divided:

- You hardly ever see the records after the first season, except for a few times in Season 2.

- They’re looking at a picture of the short-lived Rocky Road to Doom (8-1-84)

- Mickey might keep the newspaper clippings about Princess Luanna (6-1-84)

- One of the disguises the boys used to get into the Siedah video was construction workers (25-1-84)

- I threw in a picture of the Civic Pride float (26-1-84)

- In the first episode, the kids basically did walk out on Mickey (1-1-84)

- Ah, the Singing Machine. They advertised it constantly in Season 1. Basically a karaoke machine, it was the only way they could pull off a concert with no one playing instruments.

- By Season 4, Gina was the dancer that had been there the longest, so I decided she deserved a speaking part.

- “Old Time Rock and Roll” (#1, 11-1-84 and #1, 51-2-85)

- “ABC” (#1, 6-1-84)

- “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)” (#1, 18-1-84)

- “So Shy” (#3, 18-1-84)

- “A Million Miles Away” (#3, 16-1-84)

- “Tough All Over” (#5, 27-2-85)

- “The War Song” (#1, 10-1-84)
